3 Tips for Cold Weather Motorcycle Riding

Ultimately summer is the best time to be riding your motorcycle but sometimes you come across circumstances where you just have to pull your two wheeler out of the garage and fire it up for an errand in the cold weather. Many times we see the temperature reading throughout the day, and the meteorologist will say what the temperature is, but the wind chill factor creates another few degrees of colder temperature which is the same when riding your motorcycle, and the temperature can me much colder when you are traveling at faster speeds.

Sometimes we learn by our mistakes but any exposed skin must be covered with at least two layers of clothing. Also, to enjoy absolutely comfortable and safe riding you will have to wear some long underwear, even two pairs! I prefer thermal over fleece underwear because when you are riding your motorcycle in cold weather you are not sweating so you should be quite comfortable. So either thermal or fleece would be fine. After the underwear, on goes your regular clothes topped off with your leathers or a good suit of outer riding garments.

A big concern is keeping your feet warm. A good pair of waterproof, leather boots that do not fit too tightly as you need room for air to circulate around your feet to keep them warm and worn over ample socks, extra socks if your boots are not insulated, is a must. Your hands need heavy thermal gloves possibly a pair of warmers inside your leather gloves would help a lot. And, so much the better if your bike is equipped with cowlings, that would be ideal as well. So as not to freeze your nose, protect yourself with a good face mask.

In the olden days cardboard and newspapers were used to insulate our homes and barns, so lining our bodies with newspapers worn under our outerwear makes for good insulation. Especially if you get caught in an unexpected cold spell when you are riding at 60 miles an hour, the chill factor will reach you pretty quickly. Other riding tips are to watch for black ice, while a dangerous, hidden treat is leaves that are on manhole covers or nicely frozen on the highway which makes for a perfect skateboard for your tires.

Your successful training in defensive driving will be very beneficial during the cold and winter season as cars are running with their heaters on so there is always the possibility the car driver will not hear you over the heater blower, plus the fact that all car windows are closed. Also, you should be extra cautious if you come up to a car that has snow around the windows which can result in limiting the driver's visibility. Motorcycling in cold weather may not be as much fun as riding in the summer sun but you can certainly ride, keeping warm and being careful on the road should add up to a wonderful riding experience.
