WITH a new lease on life, the former harbour master’s house at Flagstaff Hill is now bringing in a swag of tourism awards for the maritime village.
Lighthouse Lodge, operated by Flagstaff Hill, was named best new accommodation development at the National Accommodation Industry Awards for Excellence.

It is the lodge’s second award since it opened in March 2010, winning the best new product category at last year’s Victorian Tourism Awards. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village manager Peter Abbott said the win was recognition of the hard work of local contractors and staff who were involved in the redevelopment.

“It was a small investment but it has been a real success, creating something unique for the Great Ocean Road,” he said.

“It’s brought a new element to Flagstaff Hill, people from all around the world and locals have stayed there.

“We used all local contractors, lots of local people were involved in this project which has developed something new for our tourism market.”

The accommodation was transformed from the rundown 1911 harbour master’s home into a three-bedroom residence with modern comforts.

Mr Abbott said Lighthouse Lodge, which is wheelchair accessible, generated about $60,000 in revenue in the past year, compared to $10,000 when it was used as rental accommodation.

He said guest comments have all been positive with the lodge also rated number one on Trip Advisor, a website where guests can give feedback and rate their stay.

Glasgow business leaders have hailed the potential economic benefit of a “new era” for transport, tourism, accessibility and commercial property development in anticipation of next week’s opening of the completed M74.

Scott Taylor, head of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau said the new three-mile stretch of motorway between the Fullarton Road Junction and the Kingston Bridge was already benefiting the city economy, prompting one major hotel operator to enter negotiations over a site in Dalmarnock. He said he expected many further benefits to the city’s tourism economy.

The new road link, which cost £445 million and took three years to build, will be opened on Tuesday by the Duke of Gloucester.
Taylor said: “The M74 link is a very significant development for Glasgow in terms of the opportunities it brings in terms of attracting inward investment.

“We are in advanced discussions with a hotel operator who was specifically attracted to Dalmarnock by the extra facilitator of that roadway.

“It will open up the southeast area of Glasgow which is already morphing because of the Commonwealth Games-related development. It will be a very different place in two to three years. But the completed motorway opens up the whole of south Glasgow and southern Scotland to new opportunities of travelling to Glasgow airport. More passengers means more planes and more routes. It will improve our pitch [to bring in new airlines] enormously.”

Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce said: “The impact of the M74 means that the regeneration offer in Glasgow’s east end switches from off to on. Virtually no development of real significance would be going ahead without it.

“For Glasgow business traffic it will be transformative … It has the potential to make every life in Glasgow so much straightforward and take congestion out of city centre.

Iain Davidson, head of industrial and logistics with property consultant Colliers International in Glasgow, said: “From an industrial and general property point of view, the new road can only benefit Glasgow.

“A lot of people perceive the main industrial property benefactor being the west of the city at Cardonald and Hillington once the Kingston Bridge bottleneck is removed … there are also immediate benefits to the east end and around the Clyde Gateway [regeneration scheme] where road connectivity is vital to potential industrial occupiers.

“Areas that will benefit include Polmadie, Dixons Blazes, Shawfield and Cambuslang which will have new life breathed into them, though we expect people will have to drive the new road for themselves before we start seeing a direct impact on enquiry levels.”

This follows an additional Sh400 million that the tourism industry will receive from the Catering And Tourism Development Levy.

The country’s tourism marketing is carried out under the aegis of the Kenya Tourist Board.

In the 2011/2012 budget estimates released last week, the government allocated Sh800 million to the department. An extra Sh200 million will be advanced to KTB for the purpose of marketing Kenya as a destination of choice to tourists.

The total allocation to the agency will be a record high in its history coming at a time when it has constantly received less funding. Despite being one of the key foreign exchange earners for the exchequer, tourism sector has consistently been under funded.

Speaking earlier in the year, Tourism minister Mr Najib Balala had indicated that the sector would push for at least Sh1 billion in funding for marketing activities.

Compared to other destinations that Kenya rivals, the funds are however still below what competition offers to market their destinations.

According to Tourism assistant minister Ms Cecil Mbarire, the sector is in the process of engaging partners for funding. “We are in discussion with others to seek ways of ensuring that we get more funding to market destination Kenya,” said Ms Mbarire.The summit is part of a familiarisation programme for the officers to enable them experience first hand local tourist attraction centres they market abroad.

Unlike previous methods where stakeholders used to line up at CTDLT branches to pay manually, they will now be remitting the same using e-banking, mobile money transfer and better website management.

JAKARTA, May 9 (Reuters Life!) -- Environmental group WWF has recorded images of 12 endangered Sumatran tigers, including a mother playing with cubs, in an Indonesian forest that it said is about to be cleared by loggers.

WWF, which estimates that there are only 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, captured the images on camera traps in the Bukit Tigapuluh forest on central Sumatra island, which has seen rampant deforestation for palm oil and paper plantations.

Karmila Parakkasi, leader of WWF’s tiger research team in Sumatra, said the number of big cats seen in two months of observation was impressive.

“What’s unclear is whether we found so many tigers because we’re getting better at locating our cameras or because the tiger’s habitat is shrinking so rapidly here that they are being forced into sharing smaller and smaller bits of forests,” Parakkasi said.

Still images show six individual tigers and a mother with a cub, while the video shows footage of another mother and three young cubs playfully chasing a leaf.

WWF said Indonesia’s government had pledged to protect this forest area, but it was inside a land concession belonging to a subsidiary of Indonesian paper firm Barito Timber Pacific (BRPT.JK). The firm was not immediately available for comment.

“As soon as pending permits are granted by the government, the company could clear the forest to supply the wood to Asia Pulp & Paper of Sinar Mas Group,” said WWF, adding that it and other environmental groups have opposed the clearance plan.

A spokesman for Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) said Barito Pacific Timber does not provide any pulpwood to its mills, and it fully supported the permanent protection of the area, with no clearing of the Bukit Tigapuluh national park by APP pulpwood suppliers.
WWF said that APP’s mill was the closest to the area with the tigers, and received supplies from nearby firms. Indonesia agreed with Norway a two-year moratorium on new permits to clear forest, under a landmark $1 billion deal to curb greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation, but it has yet to be signed into law as ministries wrangle over details.

The moratorium was expected to slow rapid industry expansion by the world’s largest producer of palm oil, used to make everything from biscuits and soap to biodiesel and seeing growing demand from consumers in fast-growing Asia.

Sinar Mas has come under fire from environmentalists over deforestation, leading major consumer firms such as Unilever (ULVR.L), Nestle (NESN.VX) and Burger King to stop buying palm oil from it.

 All Jammu Hotels & Lodges Association (AJHLA), a trade panel advocating cause of Jammu, today criticised the J&K government''s attitude towards implementation of tourism related projects in the Jammu region.
"We flay non-seriousness and dilly dallying adopted by the J&K government in taking up and implementing tourism related projects in Jammu region", AJHLA President Inderjeet Khajuria told reporters here today.
Khajuria added that the state government authorities are talking about the laying of ropeway between Mubarak Mandi, Bahu Fort and Mahamaya for about two decades now.
AJHLA president was responding to a statement by Minister for Tourism and Culture Rig Jin Jora stating that all technical codal and land acquiring formalities of the same are still to be completed.
"To learn that the technical codal and land acquisition formalities of the said project are yet to be completed is highly disappointing. It indicates hoodwinking of the people by the government", he said, adding that no concrete steps have been taken to execute the project.
While many chair car and ropeway projects in the Kashmir valley have either been commissioned or are going to be completed shortly, the ropeway project of Mubarak Mandi-Bahu Fort-Mahamaya is still only on the papers, Khajuria said.
