Bali is overpopulated

Bali, Indonesia's main tourist destination, is overpopulated by newcomers from various places in Indonesia, Governor Made Mangku Pastika said.
He said that the 5,632.8 square kilometer island was ideally inhabited by 1.5 million people. However, at this moment almost four million people occupied the island.
"The population has reached twice its ideal number. This does not yet include the four million domestic and foreign tourists coming to Bali every year," Pastika said, as quoted by Antara on Saturday.
He cited the latest census which showed that Bali had experienced rapid population growth, increasing from 3.6 million in 2008 to almost four million in 2010.
"Newcomers add greatly to the population growth, while the birth rate contributes relatively less," Pastika said, adding that most newcomers were unemployed.
"This is contradictory, because as a tourist destination Bali can offer various kinds of employment. Both formal or informal workers should use the opportunities," he said.
